POTD: 28 March 2007

We've had a bit more rain this week. This was another early morning drizzle on the way to work.

POTD: 27 March 2007

The stairs in our apartment. Question is, are these going up, or going down?

A pine tree outside office that I work in - set against a late afternoon sky.

A sad week for sport - not only did the Sharks lose to the Brumbies, and SA to Australia in their world cup match, but the whole Bob Woolmer murder just goes to show how sport has become more about money and wealth, than passion and camaraderie.

Gotta love shopping days - and full fridges... :-)

POTD: 23 March 2007

Driving to work this morning during some early morning showers - the first rain that we have seen for about 5 weeks now.

POTD: 22 March 2007

The current reads that K and I are working our way through. I'm currently reading Bill Bryson's A Short History of Nearly Everything, and K is currently finishing up Boris Starlings Visibility.

K and I had my family around today, to celebrate her birthday. This is a leftover piece of Pavlova that K made - delicious.

POTD: 20 March 2007

The flowers that K received from her folks for her 30th b'day.

The smoggy haze over Jhb. With the lack of rain over the past few months, the evening skies are filled with dust and pollution.

Close to home...

Its been a worrying past couple of days. I'm not usually one to be negative about the country in which I live - or to complain about things like the crime situation. I usually look at the positive things - the opportunity and potential. But this past week has been different. There have been a couple of close to home incidents that have been on my mind - and have started to spur a bit of a negative sentiment. I won't go into the detail on these incidents, but they range from:
- News of the murder in his home of my honours supervisor and lecturer at Wits.
- A house break in and physical attack at the home of a friends mother.
- The arrogance of a smash-and-grab incident to the car in front of us the other night on our way back from dinner club.
- The news of a car hijacking at another friends house this weekend.

As I said though, its not in my nature to be negative about this place. Just extra cautious I guess. Its when incidents like these all happen within the space of a week that you start to question things...

POTD: 18 March 2007

OK, so we couldn't go all the way down to Ballito, and not play a coastal course. It would not have been a good idea to play on K's birthday, so Sunday morning it was. This is the view from the 15th tee at Prince's Grant - a long sweeping par 5 from atop this hill, down to the house almost on the beach.
The weather was not golfing weather by any means, which made this round quite challenging. To put it into perspective - I used a 3 iron from 140m out, into the wind (normally I would play a 3 iron from 200m or more) and still left it short by about 50m. The winds were gale force - so much so that on the way into work this morning, I heard that there had been flooding all along Durban's beach front, and that 6-8m waves has destroyed holiday homes and roads in Ballito. My round of 98 in that kind of wind does not seem so bad suddenly.

View from The Vineyard in Ballito - K and I stayed here on Friday and Saturday night. Very nice place. This was the view from our room. Was K's birthday today - we spent the day relaxing - slept in, had a cooked breakfast, went for a 2 hour walk on the beach, lounged around the pool, read our books, went and had a few at a pub on the beach, and then had a nice dinner. Sounds like a decent way to spend a birthday huh...?

POTD: 16 March 2007

The chaos at OR Tambo International Airport. K and I decided to go down to the coast to celebrate her 30th birthday on the 17th. The queues look worse that they actually were. Oh, the 16th was also Gary's 30th Birthday - happy birthday dude.

POTD: 15 March 2007

I was lucky enough to be invited to play in the MWEB golf day last Thursday. Shot a half decent round of 87 and had a great day out on one of my favourite courses. This is the 18th at Parkview.

Evening sun shines through the window in the deserted office that I am working in at the moment.

Early morning start - sun rising over the Gillooly's Interchange as I make my way out to Randfontein Estates Country Club for an early tee-off.
